The Teen Project

I am very excited to announce I will be working on the new Teen Project located in Venice. The owner Lauri Burns (who is such an amazing woman and her story is incredible- check out the website for her journey in life) is venturing onto her second Teen Project.

I spoke to Lauri Friday and by Saturday (yesterday) I saw the space and was on the project. The facility will be a drop in center for teens to find a meal, get some shelter for a few hours, meet with a therapist or find a place to sleep for the night. There are no bedrooms or sleep areas in the space. Only lounge areas, a kitchen, computer stations, reception, and therapy room. Modern office equipment is needed.

The space is incredible and its one empty BOX right now. We have a crazy fast turn around time of one month, but since the space is not that big I know we can do this power through and make it happen.

We are looking for donations of MODERN furniture pieces: Colorful pieces are fine and mid century like Eames, Bruer Sarrinen Danish are great too! *just please email me pictures of the pieces and measurements.

Pieces we need:
Lounge Chairs
Reception chairs
Desk Chairs
HUGE modern sectional
Modern desks (steel or wood)
Lamps (floor and table)
Large modern art pieces
Large modern cabinets (Vintage Steel Casey or Knoll)
File cabinets

Knoll, Sunbrella or super durable fabric

The other day my dear friend Vanessa Kogevinas (who nominated me) sent me a certificate from Traditional Home's Classic Woman program for my recognition to helping those in need. I didn't make the final list of woman they acknowledged in the magazine, but nonetheless was honored to receive the certificate.

Thank you Traditional Home, I will continue to take decorate and project manage homeless shelter projects in Los Angeles.

I am so happy to share with you a project that I have been working on for 2 years for a project in Venice. The home was originally a 4 unit apartment building with a small house on the adjacent lot next door. We converted the large structure into a single family home that included 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, huge kitchen overlooking a deck. And the small lot we designed a pool, Jacuzzi and an outdoor patio.

What are some of your favorite design books and why? Can be old or new. And what makes a good design book? Is it because they show great pictures and styles. Can they help you design your own home? Is is easy to follow tips and diy images and instructions in the book?

One of my favorite books is the Domino book featured above. This book not only has pages of beautiful images from top designers but it also is educational by teaching you the styles and eras from each of the furniture pieces featured in the book. The book is categorized easily by rooms and has an extensive resource guide of where to buy.

Let me know some of your thoughts and what Design books you feel give you the best bang for your buck.

Pasadena Girls Room

I recently added some photos to my website of a girls room I decorated in Pasadena. My client wanted her daughter to have a more grown up room for her so we got rid of everything and started fresh. We wallpapered bookcases, added a new desk & chair, bought a new upholstered headboard and sheets that we flanked with custom drapes and custom pillows.

Everything was new that we brought into the room even the paint!

We even brought the clients daughter in the room and had her close her eyes to reveal the transformation and she was so excited with her new grown up room. It was so incredibly cute. You can view more of the images here on my website. Enjoy!

Sneak Peek West LA Project

Just uploaded some new pics of a custom home office I designed for my client in the Valley. The room was bare with no shelves and when I first saw it it only had a white desk against the wall. I worked with my client to create 2 separate work areas with lots of storage. The custom bookshelf came out amazing and I know my clients are super happy and enjoying all the storage they now have. Sneak Peek Venice Project

For the last year and half I have been designing a new home project in Venice. The home was originally a 4 unit building that was redesigned with 3 bedrooms and 4 baths, open floor plan with a pool and jacuzzi. I worked with my client to pick out tile, design the bathrooms and kitchen, shopped and scoured vintage furniture shops, pulled fabrics and worked on the open space plan for the house. I am happy to say that yesterday we had a great magazine shoot day and above is a sneak peek shot from the little girls bedroom. (you can see the photo equipment in the guest room)

Most everything that we bought for the house were vintage items that were all re-purposed and most of the tile we picked was eco-friendly. I cant wait to share the upcoming issue with you when it comes out. It was such a great creative project to work on.

Pasadena Little Girls Room

I have been working on a super cute little girls in Pasadena for the past couple months. It will be completed next month and I cant wait to have everything installed! Above is my inspiration board that I presented to my client for approval.

I bought gray and white polka-dot sheets and had the bookshelves wallpapered with the black and white pattern. We have custom pillows and drapes coming in two weeks. And we actually purchased two of the brown zebra stools for the end of the bed. The walls are a light grey/blue color, perfect for a little girl. As soon I finish the room I will be sure to add some shots to the blog and website!

BIO Stephanie Visser A native of southern Michigan, Stephanie Visser relocated to southern California almost five years ago. She took her degree in Fine Art from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids Michigan. She continued her education at Western Michigan University in the graduate department and at Pasadena College of Art and Design studying with Mary Winterfield a well-known painter and educator. Stephanie’s painting originally began with traditional representational work and has evolved to abstract over the intervening years. Her work has primarily been influenced by an interest in architecture, the human form, and the environment through light, color and emotional context.

Artist Statement My work is consistently inspired by an interest in the natural and man made world of architecture and environment and the collision of that world with the inner life of the soul and emotion. Being an abstract artist, there is no literal reference but a distilling and a merging of the elements that make up this complex landscape of our lives. The emotions that reveal themselves are sometimes nonspecific and yet perhaps are recognizable as something known or remembered, like that name or that word you struggle for on the tip of your tongue. A non-pictorial representation that is deeply intimate and suggestive, where the tug of sensation comforts, or pinches, stirring up emotion mixed with memory: mind photographs that reflect everyday life and the way it impacts one: sunlight and shadows: stillness and movement: sound and quiet.

The pieces themselves are created with acrylic and other mixed media usually in series. I begin by laying down a gesture, which leads to color, shape, and form until something in it moves me, like a Rorschach inkblot but infinitely more subtle. While cleaning out a huge stack of fashion and design magazines I ran across an article in Marie Claire and found this image above from a Favela type painting project in Rio De Janeiro. The message behind the painting project was to beautify a low income area into a bright and happy place. This image could not be more PERFECT for my inspiration on how I am going to decorate my room at Good Shepherd - and to boot the message behind what the artists wanted to create and our design project. What a happy accident.

So yesterday I tweeted a picture of this vintage regency high back chair and could not believe how many fellow bloggers and designers tweeted how much they loved the chair as well! And to that I have decided to go buy it today. I am excited to see what the new and improved chair will look like next month. So stay tuned...

Sun Valley, CA / E-Decorating Project

Above are images are from my latest E-Decorating project I completed for a client in Sun Valley. The client wanted to incorporate an ethnic mix in her TV room that felt grown up but that was kid and baby friendly.

I added lots of upholstered items the were good for kids. She need some storage options for toys so I suggested the baskets to be placed on the white shelf for easy clean up in the room. The dark sofa with its modern lines is the perfect base to add textile prints like Ikat which I have shown. You also don't see spills and stains because if its dark fabric. The client wanted color so punches of red like the small side table (again not squared- thinking of the kids), was a nice compliment to the rest of the room.

And please note out of respect for my paying clients I do not give our product information.

I love having the opportunity to create custom pieces for clients so for this project I custom designed a bookcase/file cabinet for my clients office in Sherman Oaks. They had a ton of books so book shelves were needed as well as lots of storage for files so we had five file drawers constructed. Above are the original drawings and the image below it is the finished product. We have lots more to do in the room but wanted to post a little sneak peek of the shelf unit. Enjoy!

New Womens Shelter Project

I am sooo happy to announce that Vanessa Kogevinas and I are in the process of working on collaborating with and decorating a Women’s Housing Project near downtown LA (please note this is NOT the Downtown Women’s Center but another facility) and we are looking for some designers to help on this new project.

The room that will be decorated is small 12x14 and we will have a fast turn around like a month or so to do each room, start date is June 1st and we have a couple more rooms still available. PLEASE NOTE you must be a practicing designer with a website and/or at least 4-6 images that you can forward. And we ask that you please be specific when emailing us.

We are already seeking out donations from local stores and vendors and hope that each of you will do the same and help each other out during the design process. (See list below.)

Please let us know if you either have products or you want to to give your time to decorate a room. If you have any items to donate, we are looking for pieces that are in near perfect and IN WORKING ORDER not stained or damaged and could be vintage or in new condition.

If you have any of these items listed below, we ask that you only send low res pictures and the measurements to turquoise.la@gmail.com. What ever you can donate is greatly appreciated.

Items you will NEED to decorate your room with:
Desk
Dresser
Headboard or bed frame (black metal bed frame already available in the room)
Desk chair
Bed side table or tables
bed side lamp or lamps
Sheet sets to include a blanket or duvet (twin size)
Duvet insert (new or gently used)
1-2 sleeping pillows
Decorative pillows and inserts
Replace blind – 1 window or 2 depending on the room

Misc. (extras but not mandatory - ideas to decorate your room with)

Shelving (Ikea floating etc.)
Decals (birds kids shapes)
Frames (artwork or extra molding)
Artwork or wall art
Large coffee table books or vintage books
Wallpaper rolls (or even small remnants that can be framed)

NOTHING BREAKABLE LIKE vases, ceramic items or small figurines

Thank you Carlo for having me participate in the 5 Must Have's Event for Fall through West Elm last week. We had a fantastic turn out and many people came out to hear our panel talk about West Elms Must Have's for Fall. If you were not able to make it last Thursday, each presenter went around to their decorated area in the store and we then suggested each piece you might want to add to your space.

These were my 5 Must Have's:
1.Dress up you white/beige sofa with a throw over the center of your center.

2. Accessorize with large pillows so you can snuggle in your sofa or use them on the floor for extra seating for your friends.

3. Use floor lamps as side lamps. Put you floor lamp next to your side table so you can put more on your table top. Create an eating/work area with a table lamp on your table. You always need some direct lighting when you work. So why not accessorize with a table lamp on your breakfast table or dining table.
