Last week my client picked up her new custom desk for her office. We had the entire body of the desk re-lacquered in black gloss and polished all the hardware and brass legs. The wallpaper was added in replace of the leather blotter and I had a glass top made (which is not shown). The first picture shows how the desk original looked.

How does one re-lacquer?? Is it necessary to have a pro do it or is it something one can do on one's own?
I have quite a few pieces that need it but was hoping to do them myself (or make my husband do them) as we are not able to include an interior designer into our already busting at the seams budget. Any input would be greatly appreciated! I'm in LA if that helps.
