Random Question for Readers...

I know many of you have your list of blogs that you love and visit regularly. You visit each of them for different reasons and enjoy the content that each brings. But do you find that some of the information is becoming redundant and you see that some blogs are blogging about the same things. Do you find yourself not looking at those blogs as often and would prefer to read new information, images, products and projects that have never been posted before? I ask this because I had a very interesting conversation with an editor friend last night about the recent shift in decor blogs that she has experienced. I guess my real question is do you find yourself visiting blogs that have fresh new content and imagery vs a blog that just pulls information from retailers and designers? Curious to know...

Absolutely! I hate blogs that just "blog" what everyone else already blogged about. The fake bloggers are VERY obvious. I really appreciate people who spend time to show unique things. I also hate blogs that are inconsistent in how often they post. Either do it regularly or don't do it at all!

Hi Vanessa!
Interesting question! I do tend to read blogs with more original content. For example, Eddie Ross's new blog....every entry is original....like a free magazine. I tend to like blogs that have a unique writing style....like The House of Edward, or Petunia Face. Then there are the ones that will pull together historical information and new information and present it in a way it can be used today, like Stylecourt and The Peak of Chic, and Aesthete's Lament. And there are those with a very unique and often very funny take on the world of design, like Maison 21, Mrs. Blandings and Bungalow 8. There ar so many I follow (Cote de Texas with her Texas French style, My Marrakesh with her Morrocan style) that I cannot begin to list.....but they all have a very unique style and much original content. I have my magazines for the same reason....it's original. Thanks for bringing up a very interesting question!

I do enjoy original content, but I also like blogs that use info. from magazines or whatever and put it in interesting combinations. I find that everyone sees something different in every picture, so its I like seeing their take on it.

I'm curious about this, too. I tend to like blogs that have an unique perspective and/or original content rather than something that is making the blog rounds as the "it" thing (which can be a little disappointing because each blog should be an opportunity to see/read something fresh).

I wish I could be more helpful by saying more about what I like rather than what I don't like, but shopping type blogs really don't held my attention. I would rather see some kind of story or connection between all the pictures.

That said, the blogs that katiedid mentioned really are some of the best. They have a voice, perspective, and/or aesthetic that keeps visitors coming back.

I hope many people contribute to this discussion. I'm really interested in hearing what everyone has to say.

Thats such an interesting question. I find the blogs that just cut and paste photos from magazines and add their "I like this grey wall" commentary, really dull. These are from magazines that are readily available at news stands or have websites. I understand that some bloggers post images from magazines that are obscure - thats interesting!

I like blogs that are not afraid to have a voice and an opinion. Doesn't that sort of make the world go round. Today on most of the "design" blogs was John Derian plates at Target. Who cares.

I have also found a lot of the design blogs that have been around for awhile, are shutting down. I think the "popularity contest" side of blogging is getting to many. And thats sad.

WOW, I want to thank everyone for commenting! I welcome more people to join in on the discussion...

Charlie- I think you bring up a good point about "who cares". One of the reasons I was asked to blog on LA Apartment Therapy (3 years ago now) was because of the new and informative posts I added to the blog. I didn't want to post about Ikea, West Elm or like you said the JD plates at Target. We all receive the catalogs right?

I guess for me as a blogger I have always wanted to be the first one to blog about new stores/showrooms, a new and upcoming designer or post my projects with "where to buy" information.

I feel that as my interior design firm grows and the projects and clients I work with the same goes for my blog. I will continue to add NEW and informative information and I also want to say thank you to the readers for stopping by and visiting. It really does make my day!

Oh and I have to add, KATIEDID you must have been a fly on the wall or was tapping into our phone conversation,(LOL!) because much of what you said was what my friend and I were discussing. We both were like What? Huh? How did she? No???

I care about John Derian plates! For one because I love all things Derian, and two because I have become friends w/ many bloggers out there. Therefore, I care about what they care about. I much prefer a blog that "cuts and pastes" and is written by a person who is warm and responds to comments. I am not so interested in blogs that never acknowledge readers and have an air of self importance that in not merited. When it comes to my friends, I am more than willing to look at yet another West Elm photo.

As far as design blogs go, I'm in it for the eye candy. I only read text from my favorite writers most of the time. It's funny, those tend to be the friendly people as well. It gets overwhelming to keep up with all of them, yet I get sad when someone stops blogging and I miss their blogs, like Emily at Design Smack, and Another Shade of Gray. I go through phases of being blogged out and sick of design in general, or feeling like I have NOTHING to write about.

I agree with everything katie did said (she's one of my fave reads too) EXCEPT I can't bring myself to read Eddie Ross's blog because he is so icky and obnoxious and rude and he thinks that he invented the flea market find. Oh god, don't get me started on him...

I love when a blog has a house tour or a project or features a place they visited like it's their own magazine feature. That being said, it's rare I find that stuff and half the time I'm just commenting on a magazine feature. Oh my god, just thinking all of these thoughts is making me wonder why I blog at all? :)

Anyway, good question Vanessa!

What a great blog, Turquoise! And you do bring up an interesting question.

My favorite blogs are either by interior designers, or people that are blogging about their redecoration/renovation process (like I am). I do enjoy blogs that are inspirational, educational and visual (with lots of eye candy ;)).

I do think you can make an interesting blog with information from retailers and designers, but you have to have an extra layer. Pull it together in a new or unexpected way I guess :)
